Hearing loss in children

Definition: loss due to fluid behind the ear drums or child born with a hearing loss.

Symptoms/possible causes: the symptoms are missing words, not doing well in school and not developing speech at the proper time. The ear fluid is due to ear infection and the cause of the hearing loss from birth is not known.

Possible course of treatment: after a careful ear exam and hearing test, the ear infections either get treated with antibiotics or insertion of tubes if the antibiotic does not clear up the ear infections. For the hearing loss from birth, after a careful ear exam and hearing test, speech therapy is helpful and if the hearing loss is bad enough, hearing aids will help greatly.
